Black Walnut trees are a large 50-75 foot tall, moderately growing, majestic tree. Prized for its wood veneer at maturity; used in fine cabinets, gunstocks, and furniture. It makes a wonderful shade tree, and when planted for a wood plantation is a long-term investment. These trees have moderate water requirements, and show a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils. Black Walnuts will grow slower if exposed to droughty periods but is tolerant. Clean up of their fallen nuts can be chore and be hard on lawn mowing equipment. The rotting nuts can also produce a acidic smell and staining in rock or concrete.
